Black and White Photography

Andy Warhol Biography

Andy Warhol was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1928. He attended Carnegie Institute of Technology, with a major of pictural design. After graduation he moved to New York where he worked as and illustrator for magazines such as Vogue and The New Yorker. His first piece in an art gallery was in 1962, showing his "32 Campbell's Soup Cans." Most of Warhols best work followed in the next six years. One of the famous people he photographed was Marilyn Manroe. By 1970 he decided to renew his focus on painting. He also published a book called "The Philosophy of Andy Warhol." Later he created two cable TV Shows in the 1990s. Warhol died on Feb. 22,1987 after a surgery. The andy Warhol Museum opened in Pittsburh, Pennsylvania in May 1994.

I like theis picture by Andy Warhol because I think he was really creative with his choice of color. He brought a whole new style to photography.

Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz first discovered her interest for photography when she traveled with her mother to Japan. In 1970 she launched the Rolling Stone Magazine and became chief photographer. By 1974 the magazine started to print pictures in color which expanded her knowledge of how color prints effect photographs. In 1980 she shot the famous picture of John Lennon with Yoko Ono. This picture is well know because it was the last photograph taken of John Lennon. He was shot t hours later, but he made the cover of the Rolling Stone Magazine as he was promised. In 1983 Leibovitz wrote a book about her experiences and joined Vanity Fair. Her first museum show took place in 1991, which toured around the world. Today Leibovitz continues to do photography and shoot pictures of famous people. Just a couple of well known celebraties that she has done a photo shoot for are Demi Moore, Woopi Goldberg, Bruce Springsteen, Bill Gates, Brad Pitt, Ellen Degeneres and of corse, the one and only Miley Cyrus.

I think this photo of Miley Cyrus is interesting because this particular shoot for the Vanity Fair magazine ended up stiring up a lot of controversy in the media. Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana is supposed to be known as a role model for young girls and teens. This photo questioned her as a person and the choices that she chose to make. I find it ironic that the famous photographer that we were told to research was the same person that took these pictures that started a scandal and mix up in the media.

Black and White Photography Questions

1) Three basic elements of a camera:

Lens (optical element)

film (chemical element)

camera body (mechanical element)

2) Single-Lens- Reflex (SLR) Camera:

Photographer sees the same image that's exposed to the film

Doesn't need electricity to take picture

3) Aperture:

controls amount of light that reaches the digital camera sensor

opens wide when light decreases and closes small when light is bright

4) Shutter Speed:

setting that controls the length of time the shutter is open (letting light in camera)

can be a fraction of a second or multiple seconds at a time

5) Three things that need to be balanced for exposure:

aperture, shutter speed and ISO/film speed

6) On a sunny day you would use low film speed because of the constant brightness.

7) Four steps to developing black and white film:

place film on developing agent

rinse film with water or a "stop" bath

unexposed silver-halide crystals are removed in fixing bath

wash film with water to remove processing chemicals. Film strip then dried and individual exposures are cut into negatives

8) Things needed to make black and white prints:

dark room

developer tray

stop bath tray

fixer bath

water bath

hanger to dry pictures

9) Back and white image material is actually silver.

Puzzle

I like the black and white picture with the "puzzle" effect, but this wasn't one of my favorite effects I've used with photoshop.

Tearing a Picture to Reveal Another

I decided to tear a picture of me, and add a picture of me playing lacrosse in the background since that's my favorite sports. The picture turned out a lot cooler than I thought it would be.
